Design and Technology
At Greenside, we are committed to providing every child with engaging and meaningful learning experiences in Design and Technology (D.T.). We believe D.T. is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject that encourages creativity, resilience, and innovation.
Using imagination and problem-solving, pupils at Greenside design and make purposeful products that address real and relevant challenges. They are encouraged to consider the needs, wants, and values of themselves and others while working across a range of contexts. Our D.T. curriculum fosters resourcefulness and enterprise, helping pupils become capable citizens in an increasingly technological world.
Pupils acquire a broad foundation of subject knowledge and draw on key disciplines including mathematics, science, computing, engineering, and art. Through the study and evaluation of both historical and contemporary design, they develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on society and everyday life.
A Practical, Creative, and Connected Approach
We follow the Design and Technology Association’s Projects on a Page scheme of work, which provides a structured and progressive framework for teaching D.T. across the school. One project is delivered each term, and learning is linked wherever possible to the core films and books that children are studying, providing rich, cross-curricular connections and deeper purpose to the design tasks.
Throughout the year, pupils engage in a process of designing, making, and evaluating, applying their learning in areas such as:
-
Textiles
-
Food and nutrition
-
Mechanical systems
-
Structures
Our practical provision is strengthened by our portable kitchen, which allows children across all year groups to experience high-quality cooking activities in the classroom. From preparing savoury dishes to exploring ingredients and seasonality, children learn vital life skills that connect with our commitment to healthy living.
We are also especially proud of our Greenside Micro Bakery, where pupils prepare bread to share with the wider community. This not only develops key food technology and teamwork skills, but also builds a strong sense of social responsibility and real-world purpose.
By the end of Key Stage 2, Greenside pupils will have a strong foundation in design thinking, technical knowledge, and creative expression. They will be well-prepared for the next stage of their education and inspired to see themselves as the future designers, engineers, makers- and bakers - of tomorrow.
At Greenside, we are committed to ensuring that Design and Technology is accessible to all learners, including pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Lessons are thoughtfully adapted so that every child can participate meaningfully in the design, making and evaluation process. Practical tasks are supported with visual prompts, scaffolds and targeted adult support where appropriate, and success is celebrated in many forms. By removing barriers and embracing individual strengths, we ensure all pupils can develop confidence, independence and a sense of pride in their creative achievements.
